Burgundy Villages & Grand Crus

The heart of Burgundy is the Cote d’Or (koht  DOR), a 30 mile strip between Dijon and Santenay in eastern France. The northern half is the Cote de Nuits (koht duh NWEE) and the southern half, the Cote de Beaune (koht duh BOHN).  The Cote de Nuits and the Cote de Beaune are comprised of various villages within which are numerous individual vineyards. Burgundy's vineyards are ranked in an hierarchical order.  The top vineyards are known as Grand Cru.  While variation is the norm, the Grand Crus generally produce the highest quality wines, and more assuredly, the highest priced.  Not every village contains Grand Cru vineyards
